One of my favorites in my arsenal for home remedies when I’m feeling ill. It has been praised in both the natural medicinal world and the culinary. In studies it has been shown to be an antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, even standing up against traditional antibiotics as having the same or similar success rate.
The oil contains compounds called phenols, terpenes and terpenoids, which have powerful antioxidant properties and are responsible for its fragrance :
Carvacrol: The most abundant phenol in oregano oil. It has been shown to stop the growth of several different types of bacteria.
Thymol: A natural antifungal that can also support the immune system and protect against toxins.
Rosmarinic acid: A powerful antioxidant that helps protect against damage caused by free radicals.
This powerhouse of an oil is not to be taken lightly though. Even diluted with a carrier, as is the one pictured here that I use, it is HIGHLY potent and burns upon contact with the skin. You must further dilute or emulsify it in order to avoid burns. I typically use it when I am fighting off a virus or cold. I will rub it on the bottoms of my feet (that doesn’t burn, and I don’t further dilute it when I do so), I will also take a few ounces of water, add a couple drops, swirl the water around (to help emulsify) and then swish it vigorously in my mouth or gargle with it (i do swallow it too). It will feel hot in your mouth, but it should not burn provided it was diluted enough.
I will put it on the bottoms of my feet a few times throughout the day, but usually before putting socks on in the morning, and/ or before going to bed, and I will take it internally once or twice a day, usually not more.
I have been using oregano oil for a few years now, and I definitely feel better when I incorporate it into my home remedies. It is of course not the only thing I use, I have a whole arsenal of items that help to shorten the duration of a cold or flu or help to stop it in its tracks altogether. The best example I have of oregano oil working wonders for me was about a year ago I was visiting a friend, and I knew I was fighting something off so I brought the oregano oil along with me on my trip. One evening I was feeling pretty rough, so I took a few things before bed, and hoped to sleep it off. Unfortunately, I was woken up in the middle of the night to a searing pain in my throat. My throat was burning and my lymph nodes along my neck incredibly swollen. It was extremely painful to swallow, with pain I’ve never experienced before. It was one of those rare moments for me where I was legitimately freaked out and scared, and sat in bed for who knows how long trying to figure out what to do. Do I wake up my friend and tell her? Then what? We go to the ER and they give me an antibiotic? No way would I take that. Sounds like a waste of a trip. Then I remembered again that I had the oregano oil. I took the half glass of water sitting next to me on the bedside table, and I added some oregano oil, took a swig and swished it around in my mouth, and gargled with it. I did this for a few minutes, swallowing the oregano oil after each swig. It burned, but in a strangely good way, and after about 20-30 minutes, the pain started to subside and I tried to fall back asleep.
In the morning when I woke up, the swelling and pain was gone, and it felt like a normal sore throat. I couldn’t believe it though, I had literally had some of the worst pain in my life just a few hours before and now I felt like I was just fighting off a cold.
Call me crazy*, call me lucky. And perhaps I was. After that day I progressed and got better and better. I’ve not had pain since like that, and I wonder what it was. The world may never know, but what I do know is that I am totally a believer in using oregano oil.
*Now, let me say this: I am all for going to the ER in emergencies. Seriously, this is where you need to use wisdom and discernment as to whether it is the right thing for you. I wasn’t in danger of my airways closing, and I felt peace in using the oregano oil and sleeping a few more hours to reevaluate in the morning. If I had been in the same or worse pain come the morning, I would have had a talk with my friend and said I needed to see someone, but that’s not what happened. I got better.
I think we do not understand our bodies well enough sometimes to be able to differentiate between what needs medical intervention and what does not, and we do not understand our immune systems well enough by far to know what they actually need (and 9 times out of 10 its probably NOT antibiotics). It has taken time to get to where I am, and where I can understand fairly well what my body is up to do a degree. I also trust the gut senses that God has given me in knowing what to do, and praying through health challenges helps to give me tremendous peace. Ultimately, God made my body and knows what it needs, and he gave us intelligent bodies that tell us whats up when we learn to listen.
Anyway, I highly recommend investing into a high quality oregano oil to keep in your medical arsenal. A little goes a long way and it lasts forever.
